Understanding PLC, VFD, Servo & HMI Product Series: A Buyer’s Guide

Industrial automation systems often include many different types of control components, and four of the most common are PLCs, VFDs, servo systems and HMIs.

For experienced engineers, the differences may be obvious. For purchasing teams, maintenance departments and international buyers, however, sourcing the correct replacement can become more complicated—especially when the requirement involves an older machine, an exact model number or products from several different brands.

This guide provides a practical overview of these four major automation product categories and the information buyers should confirm before requesting a quotation.

PLC — The Controller Behind the Machine

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is commonly used to execute machine or process control logic.

Depending on the system, a PLC may receive signals from sensors and switches, process programmed logic, and send commands to other equipment.

A typical PLC system can include:

  • CPU modules
  • Digital input and output modules
  • Analog input and output modules
  • Communication modules
  • Power supply modules
  • Remote or distributed I/O
  • Expansion modules

Popular industrial automation manufacturers offer many different PLC families, including Siemens SIMATIC, Omron CJ/NX, Mitsubishi MELSEC, Delta DVP/AS, Allen-Bradley CompactLogix and ControlLogix, Schneider Modicon, and others.

BUYER CHECK

What buyers should check

When sourcing a PLC or I/O module, the complete model number is important. Two modules from the same PLC family may look almost identical but have different:

  • Input/output types
  • Number of channels
  • Signal specifications
  • Communication functions
  • Power requirements
  • Hardware revisions

For replacement purchasing, avoid relying only on a description such as “Omron CJ output module.” Instead, provide the complete model or part number shown on the existing product whenever possible.

VFD — Controlling AC Motor Speed

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) controls an AC motor by adjusting the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor.

VFDs are widely found in industrial applications involving equipment such as pumps, fans, conveyors and production machinery.

Common VFD product families include Delta MS300/C2000, ABB ACS series, Schneider Altivar, Siemens SINAMICS, Danfoss VLT/VACON, Mitsubishi FR series and many others.

BUYER CHECK

Selecting a VFD requires more than the kW rating

A common purchasing mistake is to search only by motor power.

“I need a 7.5 kW inverter.”

That information alone may not be enough to identify the correct replacement. Depending on the application and product family, buyers may also need to confirm:

  • Exact drive model
  • Input voltage
  • Output / motor rating
  • Required control functions
  • Communication requirements
  • Existing installation
  • Application requirements

For maintenance replacement, the safest starting point is usually the exact catalog or model number from the existing VFD nameplate.

Servo Systems — Precision Motion Control

A servo system is designed for applications requiring controlled motion, such as position, speed or torque control.

A typical servo system can include:

Servo Drive + Servo Motor + Encoder / Feedback + Cable

This makes servo purchasing different from buying a single standalone component. Common servo manufacturers include Delta, Mitsubishi Electric, Yaskawa, Panasonic, Siemens, Omron and others.

BUYER CHECK

Why exact matching matters

A servo drive and servo motor should not be selected independently simply because their power ratings appear similar. Compatibility can depend on the specific series and system configuration.

When requesting a replacement servo product, provide as much information as possible:

  • Servo drive model
  • Servo motor model
  • Existing cable model, if relevant
  • Power rating
  • System or application information
  • Photos of the existing nameplates

If the requirement is only for one component—for example, only the drive—make that clear in the RFQ.

HMI — The Interface Between Operator and Machine

A Human Machine Interface (HMI) provides the visual interface through which operators interact with machines and automation systems.

Depending on the application, an HMI may display:

  • Machine operating status
  • Production information
  • Alarms
  • Process values
  • Parameters
  • Control buttons
  • Diagnostic information

Common HMI product families include Delta DOP, Siemens SIMATIC HMI, Pro-face, Weintek/Weinview, Mitsubishi GOT, Omron NA/NB and others.

BUYER CHECK

Replacement HMI purchasing needs extra attention

Finding a physically similar screen does not automatically mean it is a direct replacement. Buyers may need to consider:

  • Exact HMI model
  • Screen size
  • Communication interface
  • Existing PLC connection
  • Existing application or project
  • Required programming or migration work

If an older HMI has been discontinued, replacement may involve more than simply installing a newer panel.

PLC vs VFD vs Servo vs HMI

Although these products frequently operate together, their roles are different.

Product Primary Role Typical Purchasing Focus
PLC Machine / process logic control CPU, I/O, communication, exact module
VFD AC motor speed / control Exact model, voltage, rating, application
Servo Precision motion control Drive / motor series and compatibility
HMI Operator-machine interface Model, communication and existing project

A simplified automation system might look like:

Sensors and I/O devices provide information back to the control system. Actual system architecture varies by machine and application, but understanding these basic roles makes purchasing discussions much easier.

Why the Exact Model Number Matters

For industrial automation purchasing, one of the most useful pieces of information is the complete manufacturer model number.

Compare these two requests:

TOO BROAD

“I need a Delta PLC.”

There may be many possible product families and configurations.

VS
BETTER RFQ

Brand: Delta
Model: DVP28SV311T
Quantity: 2 pcs
Destination: Mexico

The second request gives the supplier much more useful information for checking the exact requirement.

This becomes especially important when dealing with:

  • Replacement parts
  • Discontinued products
  • Similar model suffixes
  • Different voltage versions
  • Different I/O configurations
  • Regional or series variations

A Better Way to Send an Industrial Automation RFQ

When requesting a quotation, buyers can save communication time by sending the key purchasing information together.

For a single product, a useful RFQ format is:

01Brand
02Exact Model
03Quantity
04Destination Country
05Application / Replacement

If the model number is uncertain, include clear photos of the product and nameplate.

For multiple products, sending the complete BOM or purchasing list is usually more efficient than sending models one by one.

MULTI-BRAND EXAMPLE
Siemens PLC + Delta VFD + Omron I/O + Schneider electrical components

In this situation, consolidated sourcing can reduce the time spent coordinating with multiple suppliers.
